Black Business Month 2025

Black Business Month is celebrated every August to honor, promote, and empower Black-owned businesses, recognizing their vital contributions to America’s economy and communities.

What is Black Business Month?

Black Business Month, established in 2004 by entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan and John William Templeton, is an annual observance during August dedicated to celebrating the achievements and resilience of Black business owners. It highlights the importance of Black entrepreneurship, which accounts for roughly 10% of all U.S. businesses and represents about 30% of all minority-owned businesses. The month serves as a powerful platform to acknowledge the unique challenges Black entrepreneurs face, including limited access to capital and systemic barriers, while also showcasing their successes and economic impact.

Historical Significance

The legacy of Black entrepreneurship dates back centuries, beginning in the late 1700s when both enslaved and free Black people opened small businesses like barbershops and tobacco shops. The early 20th century, known as the 'golden age' of Black-owned businesses, saw flourishing districts such as Tulsa’s Black Wall Street. Founder Booker T. Washington created the National Negro Business League in 1900 to promote African American business development. Despite setbacks, Black businesses have continued to grow and today contribute billions in revenue and provide essential services in sectors like healthcare, social work, restaurants, beauty salons, and more.

Why is Black Business Month Important?

  • Economic Empowerment: Supporting Black-owned businesses helps close the racial wealth gap by keeping money circulating within Black communities and creates jobs.
  • Visibility and Support: It raises awareness about the challenges Black entrepreneurs face, such as access to funding and opportunities, and calls for policy and community action to address these barriers.
  • Community Building: The month fosters collaboration, mentorship, and networking within the Black business community and beyond to spur growth and innovation.

How to Celebrate and Support

  • Shop Black: Make a concerted effort to patronize Black-owned businesses locally or online throughout August and beyond.
  • Spread Awareness: Share stories and successes of Black entrepreneurs via social media using hashtags like #NationalBlackBusinessMonth.
  • Attend Events: Participate in workshops, conferences, markets, and networking events that spotlight Black businesses.
  • Advocate: Support policies aimed at improving access to capital, mentorship, and public contracting opportunities for Black business owners.
  • Invest: Consider funding Black startups or contributing to causes that uplift Black entrepreneurship.

Black Business Month in North Carolina

North Carolina has a rich history of Black entrepreneurship, with historic districts like Durham’s Black Wall Street and Depot Street serving as hubs of economic activity. Today, the state sees rapid growth in Black-owned businesses, especially in sectors ranging from construction to tech and service industries. Local organizations continue to support this growth by promoting financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and advocacy to ensure equitable participation in the economy.

Looking Ahead

Black Business Month is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action to sustain support for Black entrepreneurs year-round. By actively engaging with and investing in Black businesses, communities can foster greater economic equity, inspire future generations, and help build a more inclusive and vibrant economy.

Whether by shopping at Black-owned businesses, advocating for fair policies, or amplifying their stories, every effort counts in making lasting change during Black Business Month and beyond.

For more information, events, and ways to get involved, local communities and consumers can explore official directories, business alliances, and Black Business Month platforms to connect with Black entrepreneurs near them.
